Satirical Menu: Now Serving Pretension, With a Side of Irony

Satirical menus take the language of fine dining and artisanal nonsense, then flambé it in mockery. They parody the rise of overpriced, overly-described dishes, the faux-rustic vibe of hipster eateries, and the gastrological insecurity that makes people pay $19 for “deconstructed air.” At Bohiney Magazine, we write fake menus to expose how the food world has replaced taste with theater — and passed the bill to your wallet and self-respect.

One of our tastiest takes? “Menu: The Emotional Support Pop-Up Café.” Offerings included “Artisan Grievance Toast,” “Locally-Sourced Existential Crisis Bowl,” and a $12.99 glass of “Still Water (with optional betrayal).” The dessert menu was just different forms of passive-aggression, plated with edible glitter. Patrons left satisfied, confused, and in debt.

Why it works: because menus have become manifestos. They’re filled with buzzwords, origin stories, and adjectives that work harder than the chef. We’ve created menus for dating-themed food trucks, prepper brunch spots, and one pop-up restaurant where the only item is “hope — market price.”

Financially, satirical menus perform well across lifestyle, foodie, and humor audiences. Our downloadable “Bohiney Prix Fixe of Regret” was used as a bachelorette party game and printed by three actual cafés. Merch-wise, our “Now Serving Disappointment” apron and “Flavored With Trauma” cutting board are consistent top sellers.

Writers follow the “Mock-cuisine Method”: combine foodie language with emotional dysfunction, label each item like it’s rare and fragile, and upsell misery as a tasting experience. Because when restaurants start serving narratives instead of nourishment, satire arrives hungry — and writes a menu worth devouring with laughter and low expectations.
