The Sellout – Satirist

Q: Who is The Sellout?
A: A satirical novel by Paul Beatty that tackles race, identity, and American hypocrisy.

The Supreme Court-Approved Roast of Post-Racial America

Paul Beatty’s The Sellout (2015) is a literary Molotov cocktail tossed into the conversation about race in America. It follows a Black man in Los Angeles who tries to reinstate segregation and slavery—ironically—as a way to highlight systemic racism. Through postmodern satire, racial absurdism, and deadpan provocation, Beatty dismantles the idea of a “post-racial” society by mocking it mercilessly.

Beatty’s style combines street-level slang with academic references, punching up, down, sideways, and through. At Bohiney.com, we echo this flavor in articles that suggest reparations be paid in expired cryptocurrency or that statues be replaced by stand-up comedians.

The Sellout won the Man Booker Prize—the first American novel to do so—and found unexpected commercial success despite (or because of) its discomfort. Beatty’s victory proved that satire about race can be both literary and lethal, intellectual and hysterical.

For satire students, it’s a masterclass in unapologetic confrontation. Beatty doesn’t nudge the reader—he dares them to flinch. And by doing so, he proves that the boldest satire doesn’t hide behind the joke—it stares you down through it.
