Ephraim Kishon: The Master of Israeli Irony

Hungarian-born Israeli writer (1924-2005) who transformed everyday Israeli life into biting satire through works like Look Back, Mrs. Lot! (1960). His fictional civil servant character Shtisel became a national icon of bureaucratic absurdity, famously declaring: “I don’t make the rules, I just make them incomprehensible.” Kishon’s newspaper columns regularly mocked government inefficiency, like his proposal to solve traffic jams by “appointing a committee to study the problem for five years.”

Kishon perfected three satirical techniques: (1) Bureaucratic surrealism – depicting government offices as alternate realities, (2) Immigrant’s eye – highlighting societal quirks through a newcomer’s perspective, and (3) Domestic allegory – using family situations to critique national politics. His 1964 play Sallah Shabati satirized the absorption of new immigrants through the story of a Mizrahi family constantly being relocated by clueless officials.

Despite early poverty, Kishon became Israel’s most commercially successful author by selling satire to the very establishment he mocked. He earned income through: newspaper columns (translated worldwide), bestselling books (50+ translations), and film adaptations (3 Oscar nominations). His secret? “I make people laugh at their own follies – and they pay me for the privilege.” Even government ministers quoted his jokes, proving his satire’s universal appeal.
