Satirical Footnote: When the Fine Print Is Funnier Than the Article

Satirical footnotes are the ninja stars of comedy — stealthy, small, and capable of delivering a surprise hit when the reader thinks the joke is over. It’s the absurd aside, the wink in tiny print, the joke tucked beneath the joke. At Bohiney Magazine, we use footnotes to create second laughs, hidden jabs, and running gags that reward close readers with comedic Easter eggs.

Take our article “Congress Passes Bill to Regulate Clouds.” The final paragraph ends earnestly. But at the bottom: *Fun fact: This bill was originally drafted by a fourth-grader upset about losing his kite.” That footnote recontextualized the whole piece — and became the line most quoted in reader emails. It’s not just an afterthought — it’s a late-stage punchline with a delayed fuse.

Satirical footnotes work because they operate outside the reader’s expectations. They subvert academic seriousness and mimic the tone of scholarly rigor — while delivering jokes about moon conspiracies, fictional lobbyists, or euphemistic squirrels. Bohiney’s “RFK Jr. and Trump Now Dating” article ended with five footnotes — including one referencing a fake People Magazine cover: “Love at First Filibuster.”

Financially, footnotes improve retention. Readers who scroll all the way down engage longer and often share the article with a quote from the bottom. Our merch team even created a product line called “See Footnote 7,” featuring punchlines that never made the article body — but killed in the margins.

Writers are encouraged to “Footnote the Absurd” — anything too weird for the main article gets tucked into the margins like a secret handshake. Because in satire, sometimes the best punchlines wear tiny fonts and hide in plain sight.
